What is the hardest thing to stand up for in today's society?

Homosexuality. I have alot of gay friends, and I defend them when people make fun of or insult them. But people who are ignorant then turn on you. Ugh, I wish it would just stop.

I think one of the hardest things to stand up for is a racially just society. People don't want to talk about it, and most don't want to see their role in eliminating racism. Since the election of President Obama, many think we are in a 'post-racial society.' Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. With the release of The Urban League of Portland's State of Black Oregon Report last week, we can be certain that blacks are doing worse today than they were in the prior report ... written seventeen years ago.

Whether you look at education, healthcare outcomes in medical treatment, incarceration rates, or employment opportunities, black Oregonians have not shared equitably in the social and economic opportunities in our community.

Now is not the time to shy away from race relations, but to work together for a racially just Oregon. This will require all of us taking a stand to create a racially-inclusive community that provides opportunity for all.

The State of Black Oregon report is attached.

Fiscal conservatism, which is too often grouped together with social conservatism. I don't see why my economic opinions must be associated with theocratic social policies. Whatever happened to Barry Goldwater? Oh right, he died.

Basically, I mean this: Just because I supported John McCain, don't think I ever supported Sarah Palin.

Nah man, two of my grandma's are convinced he's the anti-christ AND a Muslim (not that it should matter if he were)...do you watch much TV? If you'd watched some of the more disreputable media outlets you might hear this tossed around.

Jordon,
I have never heard anyone say that the bible describes Obama as the Antichrist, nor have I ever heard of anyone saying that the Antichrist was Muslim. I have lived my entire life in the church...I don't know who you are talking to.

I heard someone on the BBC talking about this. It's like a taboo hear in America to talk about race in a frank way, regardless of which side you/re on--you're either a racist or you're "playing the race card."

it is hard to stand up when you are in a place that it is bad to be gay. but in a large city it is a lot easy for gay people.

Hi Aaron,

You are right. Not only is it hard to stand up when you are in a small community as a gay person. Sometimes its less about standing up and more about staying safe. Hopefully in your community there are trusted friends, family and supporters who will support you no matter what. That is what we all hope to find no matter where we live.

Indeed. However, standing up can be hard no matter where you are.
